Build a mob farm that never stops producing

A good mob farm gives you bones, arrows, gunpowder and XP while you stand still. Here is how they work and how to build one that keeps running.

How mob spawning works

  • Hostile mobs spawn on blocks with light level 0.
  • They only spawn more than 24 blocks from you.
  • Mobs despawn instantly more than 128 blocks away, and can randomly despawn past 32 blocks.

Build a simple drop farm

You will need
  • Cobblestone1,000+
  • Water buckets8
  • Trapdoors24
  • Hoppers4
  • Chests2
  1. 1
Build high up or over the ocean

Fewer caves nearby means more mobs spawn in your farm.

  2. 2
    Make dark spawning floors

Keep it fully dark. Water streams push mobs to the center.

  3. 3
    Add a 22-block drop

Falling 22 blocks leaves most mobs on 1 health so one hit kills them.

  4. 4
    Collect with hoppers

Hoppers under the kill spot send drops into chests.
