The four parts you need to know

PartWhat it does
Redstone dustCarries a signal up to 15 blocks
RepeaterBoosts the signal back to full, with a 1 to 4 tick delay
ComparatorReads containers and compares signal strength
ObserverSends a pulse when the block in front of it changes
Redstone dust, repeaters and torches wired across a stone floor
Repeaters keep a signal strong over long runs.

8 contraptions worth building

  1. Automatic lights: a daylight sensor, set to inverted, turns lamps on at night.
  2. Sugar cane farm: an observer watches the cane and a piston breaks it when it grows.
  3. Auto smelter: hoppers feed items and fuel into furnaces and collect the output.
  4. Piston door: sticky pistons open a hidden wall. See doors explained.
  5. Item sorter: comparators filter items into the right chest. See item sorters.
  6. Bubble elevator: soul sand under water pushes you up, and magma pulls you down.
  7. Doorbell: a button wired to a note block.
  8. Trapped chest alarm: opening the chest powers a note block or lamp.
